The story of Wowzerful began when my friend Branden and I, along with our wives and children, planned a visit to Vancouver Island in the summer of 2020.
As we sat around the outdoor dining table conversing about parenting, homeschooling, and other topics that parents seem to obsess over these days, we watched with pride and amazement as our children busily overturned logs and rocks as they hunted for snakes and other interesting creatures in the garden. No screens or other distractions. Just kids being kids, full of curiosity and wonder as they explored the landscape.
It was in that moment that we truly recognized the importance of our role as parents to encourage our kids to discover a zest for the natural world around them. Whether it’s pondering the vastness of our universe, or delving into a world teeming with life in our own backyards, children have a natural inclination to learn and discover, and we wanted to encourage this curiosity as much as possible.
We started to think about how we could take the best nature content from the internet and package it up in a nicely formatted, carefully curated, easy-to-read weekly newsletter for other busy parents like us.
We spent some time planning, brainstorming, and consulting with our kids. When we felt we had a plan in place, we sent an introductory email to our friends and family to see if they would want to receive weekly kid-friendly nature content from us. To our surprise, nearly every single person responded positively and wanted to be a part of our new community. It was then that we fully realized we really had our work cut out for us!
Our first newsletter, featuring the praying mantis, was delivered in mid-November, 2020. Since then, we’ve sent an email every week with subjects ranging from termites to aye-ayes, venus flytraps to the human brain, and a whole bunch more in between.
Feedback from our growing community has been overwhelmingly positive, and it’s encouraging to know that we’re helping other families to connect and learn with their kids.
In addition to our weekly newsletter, we’ve also created the Wowzerful store, where you’ll find custom-designed, nature-themed T-Shirts for the whole family.
Our mission at Wowzerful is to inspire parents and children to get outside and explore the amazing world around them by providing thoughtful, kid-friendly content in a fun and interesting way. We’re just getting started, but are looking forward to seeing where this journey will take us.
