Overview
The vicuña is a delightful animal that roams the high altitudes of the Andes mountains in South America. These furry friends belong to the camel family, but they do not spit like their cousins!
Vicuñas typically stand about 0.76 to 1.07 meters (2.5 to 3.5 feet) tall at the shoulder. Their slender bodies and long legs help them sprint gracefully across the rugged terrain they call home.
With their soft, golden-brown fleece, vicuñas have earned a reputation for their luxurious wool. This wool is so cozy and warm that it can be spun into some of the finest textiles on the planet!
Vicuñas munch on grasses and other tasty plants as they graze. Their special digestive system helps them break down tough plant materials to get the energy they need to play and run.
Living in herds, these social creatures communicate with each other using a variety of sounds. They even take turns keeping watch for danger while the rest of the group eats and relaxes.
Vicuñas can live for 15 to 20 years and are full of energy during their lives. They enjoy frolicking in their high-altitude paradise, showing off their agility and speed like true mountain champions!
